Kiwi Berry
September 25, 2010

I saw Kiwi Berries at the farmer's market this morning. They are olive sized kiwi with a thin, smooth skin. Ripened Kiwi berries are very sweet like candy but they have loads of vitamins and minerals. They are wonderful to eat as they are like you eat grapes but I am looking forward to experimenting with this little fruit for some new recipe ideas. I am thinking to use some of the unripe ones to make salsa. Then maybe chutney later?

Featured Project : Beets
Beets Cupcake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Beets have such a wonderful color and natural sweetness. If carrots can make a great cake, why not beets?

I made beets cupcakes. You barely taste them but there is a hint of beets there.

Here is the recipe.

Sauteed Beets and Greens

After my first few experimental beet dishes that I put together and the wonderful beet gazpacho at the Artisa Supper Club, my husband has started to say "beets are not bad," but he still hasn't learned to appreciate beets. It is time to go one step further to develop a beet recipe that focuses on beets' natural flavor instead of disguising it with other flavors.

Artisa Kitchen, Supper Club
September 5, 2010

On the last Thursday of August, I had a surprisingly wonderful dining experience at the Artisa Kitchen Supper Club. I found out about this supper club from the daily newsletter that I subscribe to from Tasting Table (this is a great source for food, drink and restaurant info in DC. If you have not signed up for their newsletter, I highly recommend it). As soon as I read about this supper club, I went to their website and booked the next available dinner.

Palena
September 5, 2010

We finally returned to Palena for the second time last weekend. As with our first experience, the food was absolutely excellent and we regretted that we had waited so long to go back.

After spending a beautiful day walking through Rock Creek Park with our dog, we put our name on the list for outdoor seating in the Cafe and we sat for dinner after only a 30-minute wait.

Corn and Yellow Beets Chowder
September 5, 2010

When I visited the U Street Farmer's Market last Saturday, I realized I had neglected certain kinds of beets. I thought about only red beets when I have been developing the beet recipes these last few weeks.

The yellow beets that I got from the market actually have a white fresh inside and tasted similar to a radish. They are very mild and do not have the strong color properties that is one of the factors that many beet-haters dislike.
