Too Salty?
September 2009

One of the disturbing things I noticed when I returned to the U.S. recently and began testing all sorts of Washington DC restaurants is the saltiness of so much of the food. Both my husband and I have found many restaurants seem to overseason their dishes. Yesterday we had a group of 14 of our friends from the Embassy in Africa visit and everyone agreed. Perhaps folks are just used to this here but compared to what I cook at home, many restaurants put much more salt in their food than I like - or frankly, than is necessary. I start to wonder what this is doing to our health? People like savory, tasty dishes, but we are all unnecessarily eating more salt than we need to - without noticing. Restaurants should take a step back and go for more subtle taste. The best ones I find (see Global Feast DC) already are doing just that.
