Five Bites of my life
June 2, 2010

One of my favorite food blog features is Five Bites on Friday from Metrocurean in Washington, DC. Each week, metrocurean asks a chef or some other contributor in the city to pick their favorite five dishes from any restaurant in the city. It is really fun to discover what other people like to eat and what places and dishes some of my favorite chefs like. Their lists are a good source for new restaurant ideas - and it helps sift through long menus.

Every time I read a new Five Bites on Friday, I think about my own five favorites. But not just DC. What about my Five Bites picks for my whole life? What dishes do I remember the most? Maybe not the most amazing cuisine, but the most vivid steps on my path towards appreciating wonderful food. After much consideration, here are my lifetime Five Bites picks:

1. Sushi at Sushi Sei in Tsukiji, Japan
2. The curry goat I ate in the backyard of a local dance club in Montego Bay, Jamaica
3. Risotto nero at Jardine in Cape Town, South Africa
4. Spaghetti with Lobster at Ristorante Sabatini di Firenze, Tokyo, Japan
5. Ricotta gnocchi and roast chicken at Zuni Cafe, San Francisco
