Global Feast : the Marshall Islands

Gift Basket, Island Style
April 12, 2013

Bell Apple

My husband visited a little island called Namdrik. It is a Marshallese custom that the entire community prepares to welcome their guests. They decorate the facility, sing some songs with ukuleles, and prepare more than enough food. And when the visitor leaves the island, they present the gift basket full of food like coconuts, bread, fish and lobster. The basket he brought back from Namdrik was filled with some coconuts, roast breadfruits, a loaf of banana bread and a leg of roast pig!
