Best of December 2013
January 5, 2014
The best restaurant for December 2013 goes to Kin Shop. Two non-Thai chefs create wonderful Thai dishes with some twists. One of my favorite Thai dishes of all time is Pad See Ew which is wide strips of rice noodles with pork, broccoli and egg. Kin Shop's version was mixed with braised brisket to make the dish even richer. It was really great. I heard that their spicy food is sometimes very spicy, so if you are like me and can't take much heat, stick with non-spicy dishes which are wonderful. I saw many customers eating their own main dish but I really recommend coming with friends and sharing.
Roasted Kabocha Squash & Bibb Salad, Grilled Prawns (left)
Pad See Ew (braised brisket, baby carrots, napa cabbage and chrysanthemum);
Stir Fry of Aquatic Vegetables; Sticky coconut rice (right)
The best dish of the month was French Onion Soup Rings from Alder. I was very skeptical but it was really good. It is a pile of onion rings with melted cheese and reduced soup (I assume is it beef broth based). It was really addictive.
Here is the list of the places I went in December 2013.
|Cafe Katja||Cozy place with good German food. The bratwurst was excellent and costs only $9.|
|Mission Cantina||Talk of the town in the Lower East Side. Everything was good but nothing really blew my mind - or even close.|
|Alder||Great example of wonderful food in which creativity and quality meet.|
|Biblio||Average pub food.|
|Rubirosa Ristrante||Great New York style pizza and pasta. Very popular so it is hard to get a seat. But excellent atmosphere and service when you do.|
|Village Yokocho||Typical cheap Japanese Izakaya. The food is not bad for the volume and price.|
|Angel's Share (bar)||Speakeasy bar inside of Village Yokocho. Very creative and well-crafted cocktails.|
|db Bistro Moderne||Perfect hanger steak.|
|An Choi||It did not meet my expectation. Ok Ban Mi but the crispy spring roll that came with the vermicelli bowl was not very crispy.|
|The Cannibal||Second visit. Ham board with biscuit was great.|
|Panna II||Wow in many ways. Great place to go to surprise your guest with wierd ambiance. If you are looking for the quality of food, go somewhere else.|
|The Heath||Good place for a party. The music, decor and costumed host and hostess made this place special. For food, pork chop was not bad but the cod was chewy.|
|Kin Shop||Not your typical Thai restaurant. Great flavors and different menu. You'll pay more than what you used to pay for the typical Thai place - but it's worth it.|
|Black Tree||All the ingredients they use at the Black Tree are locally produced including wine, beer and liquor. Good pork dishes.|
