Best of August/September 2013
September 30, 2013
Since I moved here in August, I have embarked on an excursion through the New York restaurant scene. Some are unexpectedly awesome and some are not as great as I expectd. As many other New Yorkers already have great food blogs, I don't think there is much space for me to add any value on the restaurant review circuit. Plus - we just visit so many of them each month, I have no time to keep up. So instead of writing about each restaurant I visit, I decided to pick my favorite dish at the end of each month to profile.
Here is my very first list of places I have been so far from mid August through the end of September 2013, followed by my first "best dish" of the month.
|Pierre Loti||Good service!|
|The Smith (Midtown East)||It did not meet my expectation.|
|The Modern Bar Room||Service, food and atmosphere are all excellent. Awesome mushroom soup.|
|Jukai||Offer very reasonable Japanese course menu. The place was packed by Japanese expats.|
|Palma||Cute little Italian place. Garden seating is very nice and wonderful service.|
|Oyster Bar Brand Central||As I expected: a tourist destination.|
|Cannibal Beer and Butcher||Excellent service. Friendly. Fun place to go with friends. Great beer selection.|
|Momofuku Noodle Bar||Noodle (ramen) was just so so but buns were tasty. I did not get to eat their famous fried chicken so I'll have to try next time.|
|Darbar||Very good Indian and the price was great too.|
|Shake Shack||Exceeded my expectation. Great burger and I understand now why people are crazy about this place.|
|Blue Ribon Sushi Bar & Grill||Great service and atmosphere. Above average sushi quality. Grilled miso marinated cod was great.|
|Danji||Very creative. Some dishes were great and some were not but overall, great place. Their short rib was to die for.|
|Daichan Ramen||Good solid ramen.|
|Ma Peche||I guess my expectation was too high.|
|Aburiya Kinnosuke||I felt like I was in Japan in many ways. Loved this place.|
|Sons of Essex||Good music. Food was actually better than I expected but it is quite loud.|
|The Meatball Shop||Great concept. Loved the chicken meatball with mushroom sauce.|
|Duex Amis||Unexpectedly great and very reasonable.|
|Goat Town||Great neighborhood restaurant.|
My favorite restaurant of August/September is Aburiya Kinnosuke! It made me homesick. They have a good selection of sake and shochu. They gave us really good service. Everything was great from the sashimi to Japanese-style grilled items.
And the best dish of August/September goes to Short rib from Danji. It was really succulent, melt-in-your-mouth meat with sweet and salty braising liquid. I could not stop eating this dish.
